The Detroit Tigers are bringing up one reliever to replace another injured one.
The Tigers placed closer Kenley Jansen on the 15-day injured list with pelvic inflammation. Jansen last pitched in Detroit’s 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Angles on Wednesday, May 27, but left in the ninth inning after suffering an apparent groin injury.
The 38-year-old closer has appeared in 18 games this season and has pitched to a 4.80 ERA over 15 innings pitched. He leads the team with seven saves.
Detroit called up lefty Drew Sommers to replace Jansen on the roster. Sommers has pitched in four games for the Tigers this season, allowing six earned runs over a total of three innings pitched.
Starter Casey Mize also left Wednesday’s game in the fourth inning with an apparent groin injury, though the Tigers have yet to announce the extent of his injury. He was seen throwing at Comerica Park on Thursday.
