NCAA denies Brendan Sorsby's eligibility request; Texas Tech to appeal

The NCAA denied Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s request for reinstatement for eligibility for the 2026 college football season, the university confirmed May 26.

Texas Tech president Lawrence Schovanec announced in a letter to the school’s supporters that it will appeal the NCAA’s decision.

“I know recovery from addiction is a long road and I hope that my experience has in even some small way reduced the stigma associated with speaking up about addiction and getting help,” Sorsby said in an Instagram post. “I am committed to my ongoing treatment and being a resource to many other student-athletes and other kids out there dealing with gambling addiction and other mental health issues. … I am deeply sorry to everyone I’ve disappointed and am committed to the hard and necessary work ahead.”

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Sorsby completed a 35-day in-patient rehab for his gambling addiction at Algamus in Goodyear, Arizona, adding that Sorsby is expected to return to campus in the upcoming days, with a court date scheduled for June 1 in Lubbock County.

State gaming regulators in Ohio and Indiana reportedly launched investigations earlier this month into Sorsby’s alleged betting activity.

Sorsby could pursue the NFL’s supplemental draft after the residential treatment program he reportedly entered.
