NY man charged after woman says she mistook him for driving instructor

A Rochester, New York, man was arrested Saturday afternoon, May 23, in connection with a reported sexual assault on Hudson Avenue, according to the Rochester Police Department.

Victim believed suspect was driving instructor

Police said officers responded around 4:20 p.m. to the 300 block of Hudson Avenue for a report of a sexual assault.

Investigators said the victim, an 18-year-old woman from Orleans County, had traveled by bus from downtown Rochester to the area of State Street and Lyell Avenue for a driving school appointment.

According to police, the suspect approached the victim while she was standing outside the driving school and spoke with her from a vehicle. The victim believed the man was her driving instructor and entered the vehicle, police said.

Assault reported at Hudson Avenue apartment

Police said the suspect drove the victim to an apartment in the 300 block of Hudson Avenue, where the sexual assault allegedly occurred.

At some point during the incident, the victim contacted a family member for help. Police said the family member was able to locate her.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Suspect faces multiple felony charges

Police identified the suspect as Wayne Plummer, 58, of Rochester.

Officers took Plummer into custody at the scene, according to investigators.

Plummer was transported to the Monroe County Jail, where he remained in custody on $5,000 bail, police said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
