Monday is Memorial Day, a federal holiday commemorating those who died serving in the country’s armed forces.
Government offices, banks and many businesses are closed for the day. It’s also a time for plenty of parades and other events.
Here is a list of activities in Metro Detroit.
Wayne County
∎Dearborn’s 100th Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance Ceremony
Start time: 9:30 a.m. for Remembrance Ceremony, parade at 10 a.m. Monday
Route: The procession and parade will travel from east to west Dearborn with staging beginning at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Schaefer. The route continues along Michigan heading west, concluding at the Veterans Park and War Memorial located in front of the Henry Ford Centennial Library, 16301 Michigan.
∎Wayne-Westland’s Memorial Day Parade
Start Time: 1 p.m. Sunday
Route: John Glenn High School, west on Marquette Road to Carlson; north on Carlson to the Westland William P. Faust Public Library. Stops at the Veterans Memorial Garden in Westland. A small ceremony will be held at the garden when the parade ends.
∎Flat Rock Memorial Day Parade
Start time: 9:30 a.m. Monday
Route: Starts at Old American Legion Hall, proceeds along Gibraltar Road to the Veterans Memorial at Flat Rock City Hall at Evergreen Street, where a memorial ceremony will take place.
∎Rockwood Memorial Day Parade & Car Show
Start time: 10 a.m. Monday
Location: Deland G Mercure Memorial Park Mecure Park.
Macomb County
∎Sterling Heights’ 47th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony & Parade, Monday
Start times: 9 a.m. tribute, 10 a.m for parade.
Route: City Center Courtyard between City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, and the Police Department.
∎St. Clair Shores Memorial Day Parade
Start time: 1 p.m. Sunday
Route: Begins on Harper Avenue from Ridgeway to 11 Mile.
∎Eastpointe Memorial Day Parade.
Start time: 11 a.m. Monday
Route: Begins at Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society, travels east down Stephens to Spindler Park, where a ceremony will take place on the city’s “showmobile,” followed by a community picnic.
∎Roseville Memorial Day Parade
Start time: 10 a.m. Monday
Route: Roseville High School, east along Common, and ends at City Hall with a ceremony honoring fallen soldiers.
Oakland County
∎Ferndale Memorial Day Parade
Start time: 10 a.m. Monday
Route: Parade begins near the corner of Livernois Street and Oakridge Street, to Pinecrest, to Nine Mile, then onto Livernois to the Memorial Mall. A ceremony takes place at the Memorial Mall.
∎Royal Oak Memorial Day Parade
Start time: 9 a.m. Monday
Route: Starts at Lincoln Avenue and moves north, ending at Centennial Commons.
∎South Lyon Memorial Day Parade
Start time: 9 a.m. Monday
Route: Bartlett Elementary east to 10 Mile (also known as Lake Street) through downtown to Reynold Sweet Parkway. The parade ends in the South Lyon Cemetery with a ceremony.
∎Beverly Hills Memorial Day Parade and Carnival
Start time: 11 a.m. Monday
Location: Groves High School with a ceremony to follow at Beverly Park.
∎Novi Memorial Day Parade, Monday.
Time: 10 a.m: Monday
Location: 10 Mile Road – Meadowbrook Road to Novi Civic Center
