NY prison inmate dies after assault at Marcy Correctional Facility

An inmate at Marcy Correctional Facility died after he was assaulted at the prison over the weekend, according to New York State Police.

Inmate Terry Demonstoy, 45, was found unconscious in a bathroom around 11:55 p.m. on Friday, May 15, after suffering some “significant injuries,” according to State Police. He was taken to Wynn Hospital in Utica, where he was initially treated in the intensive care unit for injuries that were considered life-threatening.

What happened

Investigators believe Demonstoy’s injuries occurred “during an altercation with another incarcerated individual,” troopers said in a news release.

Demonstoy was on a ventilator at the hospital and was pronounced dead on the afternoon of Monday, May 18, troopers said. His autopsy was scheduled to take place with the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office on Thursday, May 21. The results of the autopsy have not been released.

Who was Terry Demonstoy

Demonstoy was first incarcerated in the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision starting in August 2024, for a fourth-degree grand larceny conviction out of Schuyler County, according to DOCCS data. According to the record, since he was first an inmate he was released on parole and then returned to prison in September of 2025.

What’s next

State Police are assisting the Office of the Attorney General with the investigation, which remains ongoing.
