Memorial Day honors all military members who died serving in the U.S. armed forces. The holiday falls on the last Monday of May.
Here are some observances and events happening around the Hornell area on Monday.
Hornell
Parade, Memorial Day services on tap in city
The Hornell American Legion Post 440 sponsors Memorial Day events in the Maple City.
The Memorial Day parade lineup is at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home on Main Street with marchers stepping off around 10 a.m.
For the first time in a number of years, the Hornell High School Marching Band will be part of the parade, taking part along with other service and veterans organizations.
Memorial Day services will take place at 11 a.m. at the Broadway Mall veterans monuments. The Hornell High School Choir will perform. The ceremony will also include remarks by city leaders and speeches delivered by Hornell High School seniors.
The service will conclude with the laying of wreathes at the monuments.
Rural Cemetery Tour
Gary Kelleher will lead a veterans-focused tour of the Hornell Rural Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Memorial Day. Hornell Rural Cemetery is located at 30 Old Almond Road.
The Hornell Rural Cemetery tour is sponsored by the Canisteo Valley Community Outreach Committee.
North Hornell
The village hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 8 a.m. May 25 in Barillo Memorial Park. All are welcome.
Belmont
Belmont American Legion Post 808 holds Memorial Day ceremonies at the following locations and times:
The Memorial Day parade will lineup at 11 a.m. at Belmont Fire Hall. The parade will step off at 11:30.
There will be a Civil War ceremony in the Park Circle at noon.
Head over to the American Legion, 29 Schuyler St., for a chicken barbecue immediately following the Park Circle observance.
Wayland
The Wayland American Legion Post 402 Honor Guard will hold Memorial Day ceremonies at the following times and locations on Monday, May 25:
All veterans are invited to attend the cemetery services and to march with the Legion in the Perkinsville and Wayland parades.
The Legion welcomes all groups and floats to participate in the Wayland Memorial Day parade at 11 a.m.
After the parade, head over to Legion Post 402 at 102 N. Main St. for a chicken barbecue starting at noon. The cost is $14.
There will be music by “Against the Wind” beginning at 1 p.m. Admission is free and the public is invited.
Wellsville
Wellsville American Legion Morrison Hayes Post 702 holds a Memorial Day service at 9:30 a.m. in Veterans Memorial Park.
Following the services in the park, there will be an observance at the Memorial Bridge in honor of departed veterans of the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard.
The Wellsville Memorial Day parade will follow the bridge service. Marchers will step off at Main and Pearl streets at 10 a.m. The parade will proceed to Walgreens.
Following, there will be services at Woodlawn and Sacred Heart cemeteries and at Morrison Hayes Post 702 American Legion, 23 Jefferson St.
