Detroit Free Press staff members brought home 21 first-place Detroit Society of Professional Journalists awards for their 2025 coverage in a variety of categories at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 21.

Each publication and station submits entries for awards, and a committee of working journalists from other local chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists select the winners.
These awards range from the Sojourner Truth Award for Reporting on Racial Justice to Violet Ikonomova for her coverage of Detroit police shootings after nonviolent stops to wins in categories including health, sports, arts, watchdogging and more.

Along with 21 winning entries, the Free Press scored 15 second-place, five third-place and six fourth-place awards.
