Several Memorial Day parades, services and activities are planned in Monroe County for Memorial Day, Monday, May 25.
The annual Memorial Day service at Maybee’s Northside Cemetery is canceled this year.
Monroe’s parade
Monroe Post 1138, Veterans of Foreign Wars will host its annual Memorial Day parade through downtown Monroe at 2 p.m. May 25.
Lineup will take place at Monroe’s Department of Public Services building, 400 Jones Ave. The parade will proceed west to Monroe Street and north to the River Raisin, where a wreath-laying ceremony will take place.
Monroe Street will be closed from Jones to Elm avenues during the parade.
Carleton’s parade
Carleton Post 4093, Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold its annual parade through Carleton at 10 a.m. May 25.
The parade will begin at Circle K on Monroe Street. It will end at the cemetery on Ash Street, where a service will be held.
Mike Goode, VFW post commander, will lead the service. Robert Gilbert, owner of Bobcean Funeral Home, will be the guest speaker.
Dundee’s parade
Dundee Veterans Memorial Corp. will hold its annual Memorial Day observance May 25.
“We will be having a parade, forming at the Dundee High School parking lot at 9:30 a.m.; the parade will start at 9:45 a.m.,” said Larry Cymbola, commander of Post 6462, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
All are welcome to join the parade. The procession will march to Wolverine Park via Barnum Street.
Festivities at Wolverine Park, located behind the Old Mill Museum, will begin at 10 a.m.
“Our program at Wolverine Park will pay tribute to those who have given their lives while serving in the armed services of our nation,” Cymbola said. “Our guest speaker will be Navy veteran Mickey Ellison.”
After the ceremony, the Veterans Honor Guard will go to Oak Grove, Maple Grove, Lieb and Azalia cemeteries to conduct services.
The Dundee Veterans Club also will hold an open house at 1 p.m. May 25 at the post home, 418 Dunham St.
“Festivities at the hall will begin with a tribute to our POW/MIAs,” Cymbola said. “The community is cordially invited to join us in honoring our comrades.”
Flat Rock’s parade
The annual Memorial Day parade will take place May 25 in Flat Rock.
The parade, hosted by American Legion Post 337 and VFW Post 9363 of Flat Rock, will form in the old American Legion Hall at 9:30 a.m. Step-off is at 10 a.m.
The parade will proceed along Gibraltar Road to the Veterans Memorial at Flat Rock City Hall, on Gibraltar Road at Evergreen Street, where a memorial ceremony will take place.
Coach North will be the master of ceremonies. The Flat Rock High School Band will perform the National Anthem. Roger Minyard, who retired from the Army, will be the guest speaker.
Wreaths will be placed by several Flat Rock organizations. Also offered will be a salute to the honored deceased, playing of Taps, raising of the flag and singing of “God Bless America.”
Rockwood’s parade
A Memorial Day parade will begin at 10 a.m. May 25. It will end at Mercure Park, 32005 Fort Road.
Offered at the park will be fire trucks, police cars, helicopter rides, bounce houses, children’s crafts, face painting, pony rides, bike raffle, classic car show, food trucks and music. Free hot dogs and chips will be provide. Helicopter rides run $30.
Milan’s parade
American Legion Post 268 in Milan is holding its annual Memorial Day service at 9 a.m. May 25 at Marble Park Cemetery, 520 W. Main St.
The ceremony will include an opening prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance led by the American Heritage Girls. The Milan High School Band will perform the National Anthem.
A parade will follow the service (around 9:40 a.m.).

Longtime post member Steve Cummins is the parade grand marshal and guest speaker.
The parade will end at the Wall of Honor in Wilson Park. Refreshments and snacks will be served.
Members of the American Legion Auxiliary will place a wreath at the memorial. The American Legion Rifle Detail and honor guard will give a 21-gun salute, and the Milan High School Band will play taps.
Service in LaSalle
A Memorial Day service will begin at 10 a.m. May 25 at LaSalle Township Cemetery, Swartz Road, between Telegraph Road and South Dixie Highway.
Mass in Monroe
A Memorial Day Mass will begin at 10 a.m. May 25 in the mausoleum at St. Joseph Cemetery, 909 N. Monroe St. in Monroe.
The Catholic Mass will honor fallen military personnel. Free flowers and flags will be available. All are welcome. If weather is inclement, the service will be held in the chapel. For more information, call 248-350-1900.
Display at River Raisin National Battlefield Park
The annual Fallen Heroes of Monroe County Memorial Tribute will be set up May 23-25 at the River Raisin National Battlefield Park Visitor Center, 333 N. Dixie Highway in Monroe.
See 800 tombstones that represent Monroe County’s fallen military personnel from every conflict, from the War of 1812 to the present. The tombstones were erected by members of the Corl-Gaynier AmVets Post 1942, local Civil Air Patrol cadets and the Young Marines of Monroe County.
Those honored are arranged in alphabetical order and separated by conflict. Each plaque includes the individual’s name and, if available, rank and branch of service.
The River Raisin National Battlefield Park Visitor Center is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Memorial Day. The gift shop has America250 merchandise.
Memorial Day Murph Challenge
Pillar Fitness Monroe, 2121 N. Monroe St. in Monroe, will participate in the Memorial Day Murph Challenge workout starting at 8 a.m. May 25.
“Join us this Memorial Day as we come together to honor the fallen through fitness, grit and community,” Pillar Fitness said in an event announcement.
A breakfast potluck will follow. Attendees should bring a dish or snack to pass.
The challenge has become a Memorial Day tradition across the country. It remembers Navy Lt. Michael Murphy, who was killed in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005.
