It’s already been a historic softball season for the UCLA Bruins but that only continued on Tuesday with senior infielder Jordan Woolery being named Softball America’s National Player of the Year.
Woolery is approaching history, as she’s on pace to become the first Division I player to ever hit 30+ home runs, drive in 110+ runs while posting a batting average over .500. There’s no doubting the impact of Woolery’s bat, but she had a teammate who also had a case at the National Player of the Year award.
Megan Grant has set a new single-season Division I record with 40 home runs, including her most recent being a walk-off to enforce a run rule and win an NCAA tournament game for the Bruins over South Carolina.
It’s hard to disagree with the decision to hand the award to Woolery, she’s batting .506 with an on base percentage of .603 with 52 extra base hits including 34 home runs. Woolery was also named the Big Ten Conference’s Player of the Year this season, becoming the first Bruin to win the award in just UCLA’s second year within the conference.
For her career, Woolery has 77 career home runs, 279 RBIs with a .412 batting average.
Both Woolery and Grant were named First Team All-Americans by Softball America, with infielders Aleena Garcia and Bri Alejandre each making the Freshman All-American team for the 50-8 Bruins. Woolery and the Bruins will be facing UCF in a three-game series this weekend in the Super Regionals, beginning on Friday at home at Easton Stadium in Los Angeles.
