Buckeye Lake to open its new Welcome Center this week

The grand opening and ribbon-cutting event for the new Welcome Center at Buckeye Lake will be held at 3 p.m. May 21. Enjoy free activities all weekend, including live music, refreshments, Slushies and yard games. The Welcome Center is located at 4894 Walnut Road in Buckeye Lake.

Patriotic decorating contest

Buckeye Lake Region Residences and Businesses are invited to participate in a special America 250 Regional Decorating Contest. One business and one residence will be selected in each of the four lake area communities, each receiving a $50 prize from their community. One business and one residence will be selected as the Regional Winner and receive the grand prize of $250. Registration runs through May 25. Voting will take place from Memorial Day through the 4th of July. Results will be announced the following Monday, July 6th.

MHS 97th alumni banquet

Millersport High School will hold its 97th Alumni Banquet at 5 p.m. May 30, in the District Auditorium, 11850 Lancaster Street in Millersport. The meal will include a two-meat buffet with salad, vegetable, rolls, desserts and beverages. The cost of the meal is $22 per person. Checks may be made payable to the Millersport Alumni Association and sent to Jim Roshon, 11657 Summerland Beach Road, Millersport, Ohio, 43046. Please note the year of graduation on the memo line of your check. The Association has started a Scholarship Fund to be awarded to a graduating senior each year. To secure funds for the scholarship fund, a raffle will be held during the banquet with lots of goodies donated by area businesses and residents. Those who are unable to attend this year’s banquet are asked to send a donation of $1 to defray the costs of mailings and other expenses. Summer lunch program

Millersport Community Food Pantry’s Summer Lunch Program will begin at 4:30 p.m. June 1, at the Millersport Community Food Pantry, 2315 Weekly Avenue in Millersport. There will be free meals and fun activities for all school-aged children of Walnut Township Local Schools.

Blood drive

A Red Cross blood drive will be sponsored by the Millersport Lions Club from 12 to 6 p.m. June 3, at the Lions Clubhouse on Chautauqua Boulevard in Millersport. Please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter: MillersportLions to schedule an appointment.

Senior citizens

The Fairfield Beach Senior Citizens met at noon May 13 at the Tornado Shelter at Fairfield Beach. President Ken Keener led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and offered a prayer prior to the potluck lunch. Debbie Gant, Karen Mosher and Richard Neff served on the Kitchen Committee and provided meat loaf for the main entrée.

President Keener conducted the business meeting. Kelvin Hite, John Hammel and Karen Pairan were recognized with May birthdays. Marty and Dave Holtz celebrate a May anniversary. It was decided that the club would go to the Washboard Factory in Logan on June 10th. Following the tour of the factory, lunch will be enjoyed at the Olde Dutch Restaurant. Door prizes were won by all. The meeting was adjourned for Bingo.

Anyone who is 55 years of age and better is encouraged to join the group for lots of good food, fun and fellowship.

Board of Education

The Walnut Township Board of Education met May 11 in the Laker Learning Center of Millersport High School. Kolton Halla was introduced as the newest member of the Board of Education filling the unexpired term of Tom Cumbow. Several members of the public were present to express various concerns. The two exchange students were present to express their gratitude for their time as Millersport High School students.

The board approved an increase of 3% on performance of goals for Treasurer Jill Bradford.

The Treasurer’s Reports and minutes of the April meetings were approved.

Ty Ankrom, Elementary Principal, and Brad Lanier, High School Principal, gave reports on activities in their buildings leading up to the end of the school year. Carol King reported on the recent “Staff, Personnel and Finance; Labor Relations” Committee meeting. The Superintendent’s Report was given by Mrs. Radulovich.

The board entered into Executive Session to consider the employment and compensation of a public employee. There was no action following the executive session.
