MANITOWOC – A basement fire at a home in the 600 block of North Fifth Street was brought under control in about 20 minutes early Tuesday, May 19, according to the Manitowoc Fire Rescue Department.
Firefighters were dispatched at about 2:06 a.m. Everyone inside the two-story wood-frame home was able to evacuate before crews arrived, and officials said the fire was located in the basement. Smoke was visible from the front of the house when crews arrived.
Crews confirmed a working basement fire and began suppression efforts. Firefighters also completed a primary search and rescued two cats from the home.
One person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and was not taken to a hospital. The department said a working smoke detector alerted the resident to the fire.
The response was upgraded to a first-level MABAS box alarm for an additional ambulance. Assisting agencies included the Branch Fire Department, the Two Rivers Fire Department, Valders Ambulance and MABAS Division 128 Manitowoc County Emergency Services.
