Florida has created a docuseries aimed at highlighting the state’s history as part of the 250th anniversary of the U.S.
The seven-part series, called “America 250: A Portrait of Florida,” focuses on seven distinct places in the state that shaped its history. These are St. Augustine, Pensacola, Tallahassee, Cape Canaveral, Key West and the Everglades, Miami and Tampa.
Who created the America 250 Florida docuseries?
The episodes were created by Visit Florida, the state’s tourism marketing arm, along with Emergent Media. Four episodes are already available on America250FL.com, with the other three to be released in May and June leading up to the July 4 anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
“Florida’s story is America’s story,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said in a news release Tuesday. “From the earliest days of exploration to its role in shaping the nation’s future, Florida has been at the center of key moments in our history. This series highlights the depth and importance of those contributions as we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.”
What makes these Florida sites special?
America’s 250th anniversary, the Semiquincentennial, will be celebrated nationwide with block parties, educational programs, cultural exhibits and special commemorative events on July 4, 2026 and through the year.
“Florida has a long history of exploration, innovation, and courage. We designed these episodes to tell that story—and to encourage people from all over to visit Florida’s historic sites, museums, and landmarks. Florida is an incredible state with an incredible story,’ said Bryan Griffin, CEO of Visit Florida.
The national festivities will begin July 3 with first Times Square ball drop outside of New Year’s Eve. Plans also call for a Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington that will feature exhibits from U.S. states and territories, organizers said.
