Oakland County bridge over I-696 closing for two months: MDOT

A bridge over Interstate 696 in Oakland County will close next week for about two months.

A section of Greenfield Road, at the border of Southfield and Oak Park, will be out of service starting at 7 a.m. Monday as crews begin work to improve the overpass, said Michigan Department of Transportation officials.

MDOT spokeswoman Diane Cross estimated that tens of thousands of motorists use the local road each day.

“… But drivers are going to be able to just turn onto the service drive and do the turnaround so they can still make their way along Greenfield, but just not by going straight through the intersection,” Cross said in an email.

The exit and entrance ramps for I-696 and Greenfield were previously closed, MDOT said.

The Greenfield overpass repair is part of the final phase of MDOT’s $275 million “Restore the Reuther” project, which aims to restore all 28 miles of I-696 through 2027.

Other current closures associated with the project include:

Additionally, the I-696 ramp onto M-1 (Woodward) will close in late May and a portion of Southfield Road will be closed in late summer.

The eastbound lanes of I-696, from M-10 to I-75, remain closed through late 2026.
