Keyla Richardson's 'American Idol' journey ends in Top 3

It was a heck of a ride for Pensacola native Keyla Richardson, as she rose all the way to the Top 3 of “American Idol” but came up just short on Monday night.

Up against stiff competition from remaining finalists Hannah Harper and Jordan McCullough, Richardson sang her heart out. During the first elimination round after the first hour of the finale, Richardson was sent home, claiming third place. Harper ultimately took home the win for Season 24 of “American Idol.”

Richardson performed two emotional songs during the series finale, including “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” by Alicia Keys and “I Love the Lord” by Whitney Houston, both of which showcased her wide vocal range and ability to emotionally draw listeners into her music. Later in the show she performed a duet with Jason Mraz, singing “I Won’t Give Up.”

While channeling ‘Un-Thinkable,” Richardson said she connected the song to her “American Idol” journey, in disbelief that she was performing on the finale stage.

Even right until the end, Richardson received high praise from the judges, with Luke Bryan considering Richardson’s time on Idol “one of the best journeys I’ve ever experienced on this show.”

Richardson captivated Americans’ hearts throughout the season, but nowhere was that love as strong as in her hometown, which was on full display during her hometown hero visit just days earlier, when a downtown parade was held in her honor before a free outdoor concert at Hunter Amphitheater.

Richardson has had a passionate fanbase, dubbed the Keyhive, that has shown up for Richardson throughout the season, filling roving watch parties and packing the amphitheater.

“I was so proud to see the city shown in such a great light,” Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said at the Keyhive watch party Monday. “With a lot of hard work, we were able to get her around a lot of different places, from the Blue Angels to the Wahoos game, to see all that reflected and everybody get their moment in the sun to (millions of people) all over the world is really special.”

Shanasta Baldwin, who has known Richardson since she was a young girl, knows just how remarkable her journey has been.

“What a wonderful talent. We’ve watched her grow from years of singing in the church,” Baldwin said. “She’s an inspirational singer…she loves God, and we love her.”

Richardson had a remarkable run, capturing viewers’ hearts ever since her audition performance of “Glitter in the Air” by P!NK, which aired at the very start of 2026.

Judges and viewers were captivated by Richardson’s soulful voice—a tone that has been perfected over the years, starting when she sang in Pensacola churches as a child. They also fell in love with her son, Drew, who mouthed the lyrics as his mom sang on stage. Drew takes after his mom’s natural stage presence, connecting with the audience at her hometown show, encouraging them to get loud and energetic before Richardson took the stage.

Drew served as a primary motivator for Richardson throughout the show.

“My performance tonight is for my son Drew,” Richardson shared on social media on March 9. “Today, tomorrow, and for all the years to come.”

Richardson, a music teacher at Life Shifting Learning Academy, has also inspired the children there, who have been following along throughout the season.

“They hug on me, love on me. I have to make them do their work,” Richardson said of her students. “I just want to let the world know, never give up. Always chase your dream, don’t let nobody stop you chasing your dream. You just keep going, no matter what.”

Her students gave her a warm welcome when she returned last week, even helping decorate a Keyhive-themed float for the parade.

“The kids are so excited to have their music teacher on a national platform,” Tequario Talton, Richardson’s godmother and front desk administrator at Life Shifting Learning Academy, told the News Journal last week. “These kids are so excited to see her. They’re ready for this concert, so we can rock out and just be able to hug and love her and Drew, because they’ve been gone so long, they really miss her.”

Richardson tugs on heartstrings all season

Richardson has elicited strong emotional reactions each week from the core panel of judges and visiting guest mentors, including Keke Palmer and Jennifer Hudson. Luke Bryan, who was initially moved to tears in Richardson’s audition, has been one of her biggest supporters.

“You’ve kind of touched me in a lot of ways since your audition, just watching your growth from there to now, watching you come out here and really command the room and the stage…you’re just making this your moment, and I love that,” Bryan said to Richardson after one of her performances.

Singer and actress Jennifer Hudson was equally blown away.

“To think the full ‘Circle of My Life’, that I’m sitting here watching you sing this song. I hope it does the same for you as it did for me,” Hudson told Richardson after her performance on Disney Night.

Richardson ventured beyond her usual genre to rise each week to the show’s theme, even if she had never heard the song before.

By the end, she was singing everything from an intense version of “Zombie” by The Cranberries to a more whimsical rendition of “Lover” by Taylor Swift.

Pensacola’s support for Richardson

Richardson also received an outpouring of support while in California from the 850, where weekly watch parties were hosted by area restaurants, and by Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves, local businesses and the “Keyhive.”

Reeves even attended one of the live shows in Hollywood alongside his daughter, Caroline.

Reeves played a major role in organizing Richardson’s hometown concert and parade, and had been in many extensive talks with “American Idol” producers to ensure Pensacola was showcased well.

For those who couldn’t score a free ticket to see Richardson perform face-to-face at the amphitheatre, she will be performing a show at the Saenger Theatre in July. Tickets are now on sale through Ticketmaster.

Richardson’s mother, Katja Richardson, a frequent attendee of area watch parties, anticipates the “American Idol” experience will take her daughter to new heights.

“It’s the tone of voice she has—it just gives you that feeling that is just indescribable. She does that sometimes. Even though she’s my daughter, to listen to her sing sometimes, when I close my eyes, I can just feel it. She gets those reactions,” Katja Richardson said. “I believe she’s going to reach places she has never seen before. My heart is overjoyed as a mother. I’m constantly praying every day. Every day.”

Pensacola’s support has not been lost on Richardson.

“Just having a supportive hometown means a lot. … Just seeing them support something positive, it’s everything to me. It really touches my heart,” Keyla Richardson told the News Journal in a previous interview. “I’ve been getting teary-eyed all the time because that’s all I want to bring, some positive energy and just shed some light.”
