Kate Martin, former Iowa women's basketball star, signs with Los Angeles Sparks

Former Iowa women’s basketball star Kate Martin has found a new WNBA home.

The Los Angeles Sparks signed Martin to their Player Development Pool on Sunday, May 10. The Golden State Valkyries waived Martin on Thursday, May 7.

Players signed to development contracts are able to participate in all team practices and activities, including travel, and they can be activated for up to 12 games per season. Players can be elevated to the standard roster at any time, but they cannot be demoted to a development spot without first being waived.

Martin joined Golden State in the team’s 2024 WNBA expansion draft ahead of its first season in 2025 after spending her rookie season with the Las Vegas Aces.

Martin was diagnosed with a Grade II right quad strain on April 28 after injuring it in practice, but said in a news conference on May 5 that it was progressing well.

Martin, who turns 26 in June, said she missed the last weeks of practice due to the injury.
