The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department will join a nationwide “Click It or Ticket” campaign starting Monday, May 11 and ending Sunday, May 31 to enforce seatbelt violations.
During the three weeks, Indianapolis police officers will work overtime hours in a “high-visibility” effort to target seatbelt enforcement in partnership with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. In Indiana, base fines start at $25.
Indiana law requires all passengers in a vehicle to wear seatbelts. In addition, children under eight years old must be in a child car seat or booster seat. Drivers can be cited for not wearing a seatbelt themselves and for each unbuckled passenger under the age of 16.
Officers’ overtime pay will be covered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Indiana has seen a decline in deaths for drivers and passengers involved in crashes who were not wearing seatbelts, according to IMPD. Seatbelt usage in the state has also increased, hitting over 94% in 2025, according to an annual seatbelt study conducted by Purdue University Center for Road Safety.
