Owen Przymierski retired 15 of 16 batters May 8, firing a one-hit five-inning shutout, pitching the Newark Catholic baseball team to a 10-0 victory against visiting Johnstown and clinching at least a share of the Licking County League-Cardinal Division championship.
Przymierski struck out seven without a walk for the Green Wave (14-6, 10-5), who finished the win with a six-run fifth inning. Hal Gillespie totaled two hits, a run and two RBIs, and Max Moore added a hit, two runs and two RBIs, Alex Nagel a hit, a run and three RBIs and Przymierski two hits and a run.
Braeden Archibald singled for the Johnnies (8-11, 5-9).
Heath wins at Utica
Quentin Sunkle notched two hits, including a double, two runs and two RBIs out of the leadoff spot, igniting Heath in a 5-2 victory at Utica in LCL-Cardinal play.
Drew Gostrue added a double and a single and scored two runs, Dominic Morris a hit, a run and an RBI and Camden Stephens a hit and an RBI for the Bulldogs (11-10, 9-6), who remained a game behind NC with one left to play. Jamison Walsh struck out nine and allowed eight hits and two runs in a complete game.
Aaron Hays led Utica (5-18, 3-12) with three hits and two runs, and Gaige Spray added a double and a single and an RBI and Jaxson Riggs two hits. Nate Hite struck out three and allowed seven hits and two earned runs in a complete game.
Lakewood beats Northridge
Jalen White totaled two hits, a run and four RBIs, powering Lakewood to a 10-2 victory against Northridge at Don Edwards Park in LCL-Cardinal play.
Evan Moore added two hits and three runs, Carter Davis two hits and two runs, Tegan Riley a double, a run and two RBIs and Garrett Hardway and Carson Pound a hit and a run apiece for the Lancers (7-14, 4-11). Davis also struck out seven and allowed four hits and two unearned runs in six innings.
Collin Matheson notched three hits and an RBI for the Vikings (12-7, 9-6), who fell a game behind NC. Gus Cermak added a hit and a run.
Newark wins at Reynoldsburg
Cale Saunders struck out six in a three-hitter, pitching Newark to a 5-1 victory at Reynoldsburg (6-14, 2-11) and setting up a winner-take-all game against visiting Lancaster on May 11 for the Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division championship.
Bodie Smith doubled twice as a part of a three-hit performance, scored two runs and drove in one to lead the Wildcats (17-3, 12-1). Kodie Steele added a hit and two RBIs, Keaton McClain a double and an RBI and Brody Driskel and Moses Crane a hit and a run apiece.
Granville wins at Zanesville
Wilson Wells and Luke Jakobowski scored three runs apiece, combining for three hits and an RBI out of the top two spots in the order for Granville in a 12-2 victory at Zanesville (8-13, 4-10) in LCL-Buckeye play.
Jakob Culver added three hits and an RBI and Jake Johnson two hits and a run for the Blue Aces (11-8, 10-5). Jackson McMillan struck out five and allowed five hits and one earned run in five innings.
GCA rolls
Josiah Green and Aidan Rhoads racked up three hits apiece, combining for three doubles, five runs and five RBIs in Granville Christian’s 16-0 victory against visiting Cristo Rey.
Samuel Merritt added a hit, three runs and an RBI for the Lions (10-8). Josh Benvie struck out six in three no-hit innings.
Liberty falls late
Genoa Christian (5-7, 5-5) used a seven-run top of the seventh inning to send Liberty Christian to a 9-4 loss in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.
Dawson Kamppi led the Eagles (5-10, 3-8) with three hits, including a double, two runs and two RBIs, and Jackson Cecil added a hit and two runs and Drew Fye and Max LaPorte a hit and an RBI apiece. Seth Mollohan struck out four and allowed five hits and one earned run in four innings.
Heights drops road game
Maxim Fink singled twice and scored twice for Licking Heights in a 6-2 loss at Mount Vernon (8-11, 6-9) in LCL-Buckeye play.
Remy Alcorn added two hits and Tino Martin a hit and an RBI for the Hornets (5-12, 5-9). Lance Burkhart struck out four and allowed four hits and one unearned run in 3 1/3 innings of relief.
SOFTBALL
NC bumps off Johnstown
Veronica Bailey and Brooklyn Kurtz each homered and Bailey made it stand up, pitching Newark Catholic to a 3-1 victory against visiting Johnstown in LCL-Cardinal play.
Bailey struck out six and scattered six hits for the Green Wave (15-8, 9-7). Joanna Bailey added two hits and a run, Avery Sullivan a hit and an RBI and Joanna Snider a double.
Addy Zak led the Johnnies (18-5-1, 11-4) with two hits and a run, and Abigail Wood added a hit and an RBI. Lucia Kuhn struck out seven and allowed seven hits and three runs.
Lakewood beats Northridge
Averi Adams homered twice and doubled as a part of a four-hit day, driving in four runs for Lakewood in a 12-2 victory against visiting Northridge in LCL-Cardinal play.
Ashlyn Carder added a double and a single, a run and five RBIs, Allie Stimmel three hits, including a double, and two runs and Cora Redman two hits and two runs for the Lancers (15-9, 9-6). Stimmel also struck out 11 and allowed eight hits and two runs in five innings.
Ellie Reese led the Vikings (8-15, 2-13) with three hits and an RBI. Cheyann Severance added two hits and a run, Kadance Adkins a hit and a run and Nya Van Ostran a hit and an RBI.
Utica beats Heath
Kiersten Hull struck out six and allowed seven hits and two runs in a complete game, pitching Utica to a 6-2 victory against visiting Heath in LCL-Cardinal play.
Hull also recorded two hits and three RBIs. Brooklyn Hale added two hits and two runs, Kaitlin Evans two hits and a run and Kenzie Fletcher, Makena Wilson and Avery Rine a hit and a run each for Utica (13-10, 7-8).
Laityn Dennison led the Bulldogs (3-17, 2-14) with three hits, including a double, and an RBI. Lexi Purington added a hit and a run and Andrea Chaney a hit and an RBI.
Granville wins at Zanesville
Aubrey Lackey homered twice and knocked in five runs, leading Granville to an 18-3 victory at Zanesville (0-20, 0-16) in LCL-Buckeye play.
Carly Wollenberg added a triple and a single, two runs and an RBI and Josie Opfer, Sydney Cottrill and Bella Metcalf a double each, combining for four hits, four runs and five RBIs for the Blue Aces (11-15, 5-11). Opfer also struck out six and allowed three hits and one earned run in three innings.
Liberty wins at home
Izzy Parson homered and doubled and drove in five runs, fueling Liberty Christian in a 20-4 victory against visiting Shekinah Christian (0-11, 0-8) in MOCAL play.
Alissa Windle added two hits, two runs and three RBIs, Jerynn Miller a double, three runs and three RBIs, Madison Looney two hits and a run and Kayla Feeney and Libby Colegrove a hit and two RBIs apiece for the Eagles (5-11, 4-5). Miller and Katelyn Nestor combined for eight strikeouts in five innings.
Heights falls on road
Cassidy Kasiara singled and scored for Licking Heights (13-8, 7-6) in a 19-1 loss at Mount Vernon (19-4, 14-2) in LCL-Buckeye play.
TRACK
Valley boys take title
The foursome of Brady Croak, Lincoln Clements, Liam Zellner and Silas Kyle crossed in a time of 3 minutes, 35.24 seconds to win the 1,600-meter relay for the Licking Valley boys and clinch the team championship during the Jerry Neal Invitational at Maysville.
That same foursome earlier took runner-up in the 800 relay (1:32.94). The Panthers totaled 107 points, finishing just ahead of Tri-Valley’s 101.
Wyatt Merchant, Eli Busic, Johnathon White and Landon Thompson added a title in the 3,200 relay (8:51.36), and Hunter White won the shot put (47 feet, 4 inches) for the Panthers. Merchant also took runner-up in the 800 (2:01.69) as did Ty Hufford in the pole vault (11-0).
In the girls meet, the Valley foursome of Rylynn Walker, Arabella Kemp, Hiedi Flegle and Zora Douglass won the 3,200 relay (11:17.09). Allison Osborn took runner-up in the discus (114-8).
Newark runners go 1-2
Jacob Snow crossed in a time of 10 minutes, 25.77 seconds to win the 3,200-meter run and teammate Oliver Cody was not far behind, taking runner-up (10:44.16) to lead the Newark boys during the Mount Vernon Invitational.
Roy Price Jr. added a win in the 110 hurdles (15.02). Sean Brechbill took runner-up in the 800 (2:02.41) and also joined Kayleb Rice, Jayden Flowers and Dax Osborne on the runner-up 3,200 relay (8:49.04) with Enzo Catahan in the 300 hurdles (45.86) and Mitchell Chavis in the discus (141 feet, 2 inches) also placing second for the Wildcats.
Utica’s foursome of Hunter McKinney, Andrew Bebout, Hayden Quinif and Sam Krueger took runner-up in the 800 relay (1:34.00), and Quinif also placed second in the pole vault (13-0).
In the girls meet, Newark’s Janel Johnson won the 800 (2:23.39), and Odessa Andrews-Barreau matched her in the 100 hurdles (16.01). Kyleigh Davis added a runner-up finish in the long jump (16-7) for the Wildcats, and Newark’s Emma Ray and Utica’s Baileigh Yates tied for second in the high jump (4-6).
Heath’s Ariana Klontz won the 300 hurdles (51.24), and teammates Sydney Thompson, Adrianne Pethtel, Laina Purington and Lexi Brown won the 3,200 relay (10:39.17). Thompson also took runner-up in the 1,600 (6:06.00).
Taking runner-up for Utica were Camryn Baker in the 3,200 (12:46.90) and Katie Reed in the discus (107-10.5).
Shoaps, Sproul win
A pair of Granville boys won events during the Larkin & Crosten Classic at Upper Arlington.
Bode Shoaps crossed in a time of 10.81 second to win the 100-meter dash, and Callum Sproul matched him, winning the 1,600 (4:21.29).
Shoaps, Cohen Fisher, Carter Rhyan and Liam Duffey took runner-up in the 400 relay (43.01), and Cade Roberts tied for second in the high jump (6-2). Placing third for the Blue Aces were Shoaps in the 200 (22.08), Caleb Bishop in the pole vault (11-0) and Duffey, Rhyan, Grady Johnson and Dimas Spencer in the 1,600 relay (3:28.16).
In the girls meet, Elsa Tonnessen won the 1,600 (5:05.94) to lead the Blue Aces, and matching her were Tory Reynolds in the high jump (5-2) and Annie McCracken in the pole vault (13-0). Audrey Ames placed third in the 100 hurdles (15.93).
BOYS TENNIS
Newark sweeps
Linus Lininger, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles and Wes Arnold, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 singles both rallied for victories to complete Newark’s 5-0 victory against Mount Vernon to finish the regular season.
Viktor Gleckler added a win at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 7-6, for the Wildcats (11-5). Winning doubles matches were Grayson Boyer and Will Bolte, 6-2, 6-2, and Bradley Pastorius and Isaac DeVries, 6-2, 6-0.
