An inmate at Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy has been arrested and charged after faking a medical condition and attacking a sergeant, according to a statement from law enforcement.
An unnamed 23-year-old serving an indeterminate sentence of four to 11 years was found May 5 lying unresponsive but breathing on the floor inside his dorm, according to the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association.
The person was handcuffed, placed on a stretcher, and transported to the infirmary for evaluation. During the medical assessment, he admitted faking the medical condition to avoid returning to his dorm, according to the news release.
When a sergeant entered the room to return him to the dorm, he refused orders and threatened staff. He then stood up and punched the sergeant in the face before immediately going to the ground, ending the altercation. He was handcuffed and removed from the infirmary.
The sergeant sustained jaw pain and swelling as well as a broken tooth. He received treatment from facility medical staff and sought additional care at an outside hospital. He did not return to duty.
The inmate was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment and two counts of second-degree assault, both felonies.
