Moses Crane hit a game-tying double in the bottom of the fifth inning May 6 and later completed a six-hitter, leading the Newark baseball team to a 2-1 victory against visiting Teays Valley (12-8, 8-4) to remain in a first-place tie in the Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division.
Crane struck out three and allowed just one walk and one unearned run for the Wildcats (16-3, 11-1). Bodie Smith walked and scored the go-ahead run on an error in the sixth inning, and Brody Driskel added a hit and a run and Landyn Ankrum a hit.
Valley blanks Utica
Zane Hancock’s RBI single scored Brandt Lichtenauer in the bottom of the fifth inning, ending Licking Valley’s 10-0 victory against visiting Utica as the Panthers (16-2, 13-1) won their third consecutive Licking County League-Buckeye Division championship.
Brody Rodgers tripled and singled, and he and Lichtenauer combined for four runs and two RBIs, and Hancock, Adam West and Trey McLaughlin also recorded two hits each, combining for two runs and four RBIs. West and Jett Vanover struck out three apiece in a four-hit shutout.
Aaron Hays, Weston Simon and Braxton Fisher each singled for Utica (5-16, 3-10).
Watkins beats Heath
Logan Grezlik fired a five-inning no-hitter, striking out three and walking one, pitching Watkins Memorial to a 10-0 victory against visiting Heath in LCL play.
Cooper Lang doubled and singled, scored a run and drove in three for the Warriors (12-7, 9-4), who broke it open with a six-run third inning. Cameron Burt added two hits and three runs, Dylan Gray two hits and two runs, Dom Yosick a hit, two runs and an RBI and Ben Coffman and Cody York a double and an RBI apiece.
Drew Gostrue walked for the Bulldogs (10-10, 8-6).
Northridge wins at Heights
Collin Matheson and Riley Reeves totaled two hits, three runs and an RBI apiece out of the top two spots in the order, igniting Northridge in a 15-3 victory at Licking Heights in LCL-Cardinal play.
Sam Miller added two hits, including a double, a run and three RBIs, Noah Mason two hits, two runs and two RBIs and Parker Hill three hits and two RBIs for the Vikings (11-6, 8-5), who moved within a half-game of first-place Newark Catholic. Gus Cermak, Everett Albert and Nick Patton combined to strike out three and allow three hits and one earned run.
Maxim Fink led the Hornets (5-11, 5-8) with a hit and a run scored, and Zach Bricker added an RBI single and Caleb Starns a pair of RBIs on sacrifice flies. Starns also struck out five and allowed eight hits and four runs in five innings.
Granville beats NC
Wilson Wells struck out 10 and allowed a hit, three walks and one unearned run, pitching Granville to a five-inning 11-1 victory against Newark Catholic at Denison in LCL play.
Wells also homered and tripled, knocking in two runs for the Blue Aces (10-8, 9-5). Jakob Culver, who doubled, and Jackson McMillan, who tripled, added two hits and three RBIs apiece, Luke Jakobowski two hits and three runs and Chase Holtzapple two hits and an RBI.
Kane Stephey singled, and Alex Nagel scored a run for the Green Wave (13-6, 9-5).
Lakewood drops tight game
Garrett Hardway notched a hit and a run for Lakewood in a 3-1 loss at Mount Vernon (7-11, 5-9) in LCL play.
Hardway also struck out one and allowed eight hits and three runs in six innings for the Lancers (5-14, 2-11). Ashton Tackett and Tegan Riley singled, and Jaxson Marlo drove in a run.
SOFTBALL
Valley beats Utica
D’Neya Dennis and Emory Whisner, who doubled twice, notched three hits and two runs apiece and combined for three RBIs, sparking Licking Valley in an 8-1 victory against visiting Utica and clinching a repeat as LCL-Buckeye champions.
Alexa Gilliam added two triples, a run and two RBIs and Chloe Cooperrider a home run and two RBIs for the unbeaten Panthers (19-0, 15-0). Whisner also struck out 10 in a two-hitter.
Addi Moore doubled home Katie Kidd for Utica (11-10, 6-8). Leigha Burnett also doubled.
Watkins blanks Heath
Gracie Burchett hit a two-run home run and a two-run single, powering Watkins Memorial to a 13-0 victory against visiting Heath in LCL play.
Bryna Davis also homered, and Alli Langwasser added three hits, including a double, and a run, Gracie Gerhardt two hits, a run and an RBI and Paisley Conley and Emma Jellison a double and two runs apiece, combining for three RBIs for the Warriors (16-6, 10-4). Morgan Gerhardt struck out two in three no-hit innings.
Laityn Dennison and Natalie Blakely each singled for the Bulldogs (3-16, 2-13).
Lakewood falls on road
Riley Lloyd had the lone hit for Lakewood (14-8, 8-5) in a 14-0 loss at Mount Vernon (18-4, 13-2) in LCL play.
TRACK
Newark competes at Big Walnut
A pair of Newark girls won events during a meet at Big Walnut with Westerville Central, Westerville North and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Newark’s Odessa Andrews-Barreau crossed in a time of 15.67 seconds to win the 100-meter hurdles. Teammate Emma Ray cleared 10 feet, 6 inches to win the pole vault.
In the boys meet, Newark’s Noah Jackson won the 400 (52.94).
Northridge hosts Heights, Johnstown
A trio of Northridge boys won multiple individual events May 5 during a home meet against Licking Heights and Johnstown.
Northridge’s Jamie Odrumsky crossed in a time of 11.26 seconds to win 100-meter dash, and he later won the 200 (22.70). Teammates Ben Hilton won the 1,600 (4:54.68) and 3,200 (11:17.24) and Xave Fiamingo won the shot put (50 feet, 11 inches) and discus (134-3).
Carter Creekbaum added a win in the 300 hurdles (49.12) for the Vikings.
Individual winners for Heights were Ayden Greenlee in the 800 (2:13.73), Cayden Cross in the 110 hurdles (17.41) and Solomon Alexander in the long jump (19-4).
Johnstown’s Cameron Beverick won the 400 (51.23).
In the girls meet, Northridge’s Ava Travis won the 100 (12.99) and 400 (1:00.42). Teammates Macey Van Fossen in the 200 (29.18), Adalynn Noble in the 3,200 (13:47.40) and Ray Brand in the high jump (7-7) also added individual wins.
Heights’ Sabrina Bauer won the 100 hurdles (15.92) and 300 hurdles (50.11). Teammate Abbigayle Gunton won the 800 (2:32.06).
Johnstown’s Evie Grigsby won the shot put (36-11/4) and discus (98-91/4), and teammate Ella Hiebel won the 1,600 (5:36.28).
BOYS TENNIS
Newark beats Reynoldsburg
Both Newark doubles teams won three-set matches, securing the Wildcats (10-5, 4-3) a 4-1 victory against Reynoldsburg in OCC-Buckeye play.
Grayson Boyer and Will Bolte, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, won at No. 1 doubles and Isaac DeVries and Bradley Pastorius, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles. Viktor Gleckler, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2 and Wes Arnold, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3 won singles matches for the Wildcats.
Watkins falls
Watkins Memorial did not win a set in a 5-0 loss to New Albany.
