Gleyber Torres placed on IL as injury bug bites Detroit Tigers again

Detroit — Injuries continue to decimate the Tigers.

The team put infielder Gleyber Torres on the injured list Wednesday with a mild left oblique strain and recalled infielder Jace Jung.

Torres had been dealing with soreness in his left side and has been held out for three games. Torres did defensive drills Monday, some batting practice Tuesday, and was hopeful of returning Wednesday but wasn’t healthy enough to do so.

“Gleyber has been getting treatment and getting looked at,” manager AJ Hinch said. “It continues to be stagnant.

“He’s been doing some work. He’s been throwing, running a little bit, and swinging the bat, albeit not at full speed. It’s hard. Nothing happened. We kept waiting and he was hopeful. This was the targeted day (for his return), but it’s been a full series and he hasn’t been available to us.”

Torres had a similar injury early last year, with the thought being he would miss multiple weeks. It turned out to be 10 days, and Torres is hopeful this injury will be the same way.

“Hopefully days, not two weeks,” said Torres, who added the pain was less the last day or two but not good enough to play. “I’m just going to continue to do my rehab and (hopefully) progress better and kind of see where it goes the next couple of days.”

There is a sense of frustration, Torres said, of not being able to play and help a Tigers team that is being cut down daily with injuries to key players.

“For sure, but I can’t control (it) at the moment,” Torres said. “I want to be healthy and play 100%. I know I can’t perform like I really want. Just get healthy and better and come back a stronger player.”

Torres is confident the Tigers can weather the avalanche of injuries.

“We have a special group here,” he said. “I know the guys, they’ll do the job. We pass the baton (to the next guy) and the younger guys have done a good job. Injuries are part of the process. We have a really deep team this year, so just continue to believe in what we can do and hopefully continue to win.”

Hinch said pitcher Tarik Skubal was scheduled to have surgery to remove loose bodies in his elbow Wednesday but there was no update.
