Detroit – Tigers starter Framber Valdez was ejected in the fourth inning Tuesday after he drilled Red Sox hitter Trevor Story in the back.
The Red Sox had just hit back to back home runs off him – Willson Contreras and Wilyer Abreu. They were big blasts, 449 feet for Contreras and 396 for Abreu. Both admired their hits and took their time around the bases.
Valdez’s next pitch was straight at Story’s back. There was little doubt as to his intent. He hit Story with a four-seam fastball. He hadn’t thrown a four-seam fastball all season. He just gripped it and ripped it.
Benches and bullpens from both sides emptied but nothing happened, just a lot of talking.
It was a nightmare start all the way around for Valdez, who was tagged with 10 runs and nine hits in three-plus innings.
