Not only is Wisconsin as a state seeing record-high diesel prices, but Wausau has also hit a new record as of May 4, 2026. Prices here are only 2 cents below the national average for diesel per gallon.
According to AAA, May 4 saw an average $5.67 per gallon for diesel across the state. The previous record was set on June 25, 2022 at an average $5.52 per gallon.
One year ago, the average diesel gallon was $3.26 on average. Diesel prices have been rising with issues in the Strait of Hormuz, but Midwest refinery issues spiked the price to the now-historic level over the May 1 weekend.
From April 27 to May 4, the price per gallon for diesel increased by 74 cents from $4.93 a gallon.
Wisconsin slightly outpaces the national average of $5.64 per gallon of diesel. Last year, Wisconsin’s $3.26 per gallon was below the national average of $3.55 per gallon.
