A Detroit woman accused of driving her car into a Center Line home, severely injuring a 9-year-old girl, was sentenced Wednesday to less than a year behind bars.
Caris Adell Wade, 21, was sentenced by Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Toia to 290 days in the Macomb County Jail. Wade received credit for 65 days she’s already spent in jail, saisd Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido in a press release.
Wade was also ordered to complete 260 hours of community service and spend three years on probation, including mandatory substance abuse treatment and enrolling in counseling programs. She is also banned from having any contact with her young victim or the victim’s family and must remain at least 500 feet from the victim’s home and school.
Lucido said the judge promised to monitor Wade’s compliance and any violation of her probation could result in up to five years of prison time.
“This sentence holds the defendant accountable while emphasizing rehabilitation and community safety,” Lucido said in the release. “I hope she takes full advantage of the opportunity Judge Toia has given her.”
On Oct. 13, Wade’s SUV plowed into a home in the area of MacArthur Boulevard and O’Hare Street in Center Line, authorities said previously. The impact pushed 9-year-old Laila Breitshtrus out of a window and into the yard.
Breitshtrus suffered spinal injuries, a fractured nose and lacerated liver, according to a GoFundMe page created to help her family with medical expenses.
Wade fled the crash site on foot, police said, but was arrested shortly later, not far from the scene.
She was charged with reckless driving and failure to stop at the scene of a crash. She could have spent up to five years in prison for each count.
Breitshtrus’ family plans to pursue civil litigation to seek compensation, their lawyer said.
“We plan on getting justice for Laila,” said attorney David Femminineo.
