Nordstrom closing two stores over next month

Nordstrom is closing two of its full-service stores in upcoming weeks, with the first closure taking place this week.

The closures were announced after the Nordstrom family reacquired the company in a partnership with a Mexican retail giant, returning the company to private ownership for the first time in 55 years.

The company said it plans to lean in to Nordstrom Rack stores, with plans to open 23 over the next several months.

The Christiana Mall in Delaware will be the first to close on April 30. The Nordstrom Galleria in Dallas will close May 16.

“Decisions like this are never easy, and we understand the impact they have on our team members,” the retailer said in a statement. “We’re committed to taking care of our employees through this transition, including supporting those who are interested in finding another role within Nordstrom.”

Michigan is home to seven Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack locations, with two in Troy, two in Novi and one each in Ann Arbor, Auburn Hills and Grand Rapids. The retailer has 93 full-line stores and more than 250 Rack locations.

Delaware’s only Nordstrom isn’t planning any closing sales, but once the store is gone, the nearest full-price location will be more than 40 miles away at the King of Prussia Mall in Pennsylvania.

“We believe we’ll be best able to serve customers in the area by leveraging our surrounding stores and through our digital channels,” Nordstrom said in a statement.

Nordstrom’s two-story, 123,000-square-foot store opened in Christiana Mall in April 2011 and was the retailer’s first full-price location in Delaware.

The department store carries a selection of luxury and designer clothing, accessories and shoes, as well as cosmetics and fragrances.

On Facebook, many frequent shoppers lamented the closing. Newark resident Laura Hart-Siano commented, “No! I actually get really good prices on kids shoes there for my granddaughter, get my MAC, and my coffee from Ebar. I also love the holiday gifts they bring in.”

Wilmington resident James Benson commented he would miss Nordstrom’s fragrance section. “I discovered what I like in Tom Ford colognes by checking their collection. Welp! Gotta start rollin’ to King of Prussia,” he wrote.

As high-end retailer Nordstrom prepares to shutter its Christiana Mall location, questions circle around what could replace the anchor store.

Nordstrom has said it will be leaving the Christiana Mall after 15 years as an anchor. Its last day will be April 30.The Seattle-based luxury retailer owns its anchor – not the mall – so negotiations about what could replace Nordstrom are up to the retailer. But given the store’s prime location along I-95 and the popularity of the mall, Christiana Mall leasing director Bill King anticipates the building won’t be vacant for long.

On Facebook, commentors shared what they wanted to replace the department store. Wilmington native Paul Greenholt suggested the department store Von Maur or Irish retailer Primark replace Nordstrom. Greenholt also proposed having Boscov’s move from the Christiana Town Center into the mall.

Unlike other malls that are struggling to attract and maintain tenants, Christiana Mall is thriving with more than 140 stores. The mall attracts more than 10 million visitors annually with Delaware’s lure of tax-free shopping, according to the mall’s website.

But other malls have had a hard time filling the spaces of their former department store anchors. Concord Mall in Brandywine Hundred lost one of its anchors, Sears, in 2020 and the space has been vacant since.

Delaware’s closing comes after the retailer shuttered two Nordstrom locations in August 2025, USA TODAY reported. The locations were at Saint Louis Galleria in St. Louis and Santa Monica Place in Santa Monica, California.

The company is investing more into opening Nordstrom Rack and Nordstrom Local stores.

Nordstrom opened its first Delaware discount counterpart, Nordstrom Rack, in 2015 just down the road from the mall in the Christiana Fashion Center.

Nordstrom Locals offer all the services the full-line stores do, without the inventory. Customers can pickup and return online orders and access personal styling at Local locations. The company opened two Nordstrom Local locations in 2025 in Brooklyn, New York, and San Francisco.

The retailer has more than 350 Nordstrom, Nordstrom Local and Nordstrom Rack locations across the United States, according to its website.
