A little more than four years after a fire destroyed the century-old clubhouse at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, its look-alike successor is now open.
The February 2022 fire was caused by a propane torch a construction crew was using to rebuild a patio, Bloomfield Township Fire Chief John LeRoy said at the time.
The new clubhouse is 110,000 square feet, slightly larger than the original. It maintains the white column look, modeled on George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, that made it a landmark in Michigan sports and the larger golf world.
The club’s south course has hosted six U.S. Opens, three PGA championships and the 2004 Ryder Cup matches. It’s scheduled to host the 2029 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship and the 2034 U.S. Open.
