Stanford walks off FSU in extras, wins series over Seminoles

Florida State baseball lost in extra-innings to Stanford, 8-7, on Saturday, April 25, handing the Seminoles only their second series loss in conference play this season.

The No. 8 Seminoles (29-13, 12-8 ACC) were walked off by Stanford’s Eric Jeon, who delivered a one-out single that went deep and bounced off the left field wall to score a run from third base to end the game in the 11th inning.

After a leadoff pop out, a bunt single, and a double put runners on second and third for Jeon, who delivered the winning hit off Cole Stokes with a 2-2 count.

FSU trailed early after a two-run home run from Brady Reynolds in the second inning, but quickly responded with a four-run third inning. The Seminoles got three consecutive RBI hits from Chase Williams, Brody DeLamielleure, and Hunter Carns to take a 3-2 lead, and added an extra run on a sacrifice fly from Nathan Cmeyla.

The 4-2 lead didn’t last long as Teddy Tokheim tied the game in the home half of the third inning with a two-run home run. Stanford jumped back in front after DeLamielleure missed a flyball to right field, which allowed two runners to score and put the Cardinal ahead 6-4.

In the fifth, Eli Putnam led off with a double and moved to third base after a Williams bunt single. It was crucial as Putnam scored on a wild pitch, and Williams quickly moved to second base before he scored on a single from DeLamielleure to tie the game.

An RBI double from Cmeyla was equaled out by a ground out from Rintaro Sasaki that scored a run from third base, leaving the score tied at seven going into the ninth. After a scoreless ninth and tenth inning, Jeon walked off the game for Stanford with his single to left field.

FSU used five pitchers, with starter Trey Beard tossing four innings with seven strikeouts, five hits allowed and six runs scored, with just three earned. John Abraham threw four innings of one-run ball, with two strikeouts and two hits allowed.

Brodie Purcell threw less than an inning before Payton Manca made his return from injury, throwing 1.1 innings. He didn’t allow a hit and struck out one. Stokes finished the game on the mound and he gave up three hits and the winning run.
