Breaking down the NFL draft grade for No. 2 overall David Bailey

When USA TODAY Sports handed out its first-round grades of the 2026 NFL Draft, the evaluation of former Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey landed squarely towards the top: a B grade for the New York Jets.

It wasn’t exactly a home-run pick, but it wasn’t a miss either. It was a calculated bet for the Jets. At the core of the assessment is Bailey’s immediate value vs. long-term ceiling. USA TODAY leaned into the idea that Bailey is a plug-and-play disruptor, as well as a pass rusher who can step into the league and produce immediately.

For a Jets team coming off a season with just 26 sacks, that kind of instant impact isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity for the team.

But that’s also where the skepticism creeps in.

The Ceiling Debate

The draft grades did not fully buy into Bailey as the highest-upside option of the board. For weeks before Thursday night’s first round, the conversation about who the Jets would take went back and forth between Bailey and Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese. That comparison is exactly why the grade ended up as a B, since Reese was seen as the more dynamic, potentially game-changing talent, even if he’s less refined as a pure edge.

While Reese might offer greater upside as the bigger overall game-wrecker, Bailey’s ability to instantly disrupt for a unit that managed only 26 sacks last season is hard to overlook.

Scheme Fit Concerns

Another layer to the B grading was roster construction friction. Pairing Bailey with Will McDonald IV could raise some legitimate questions about the run defense. Both players share a similar build: lean, speed-first edge rushers. That is great on a third-and-long, but it’s potentially a liability on first-and-10 when offenses decide to punch you in the mouth.

So, while Bailey boosts the pass rush ceiling, he might stress the structural balance of the defense in New York.

Bottom Line

For the New York Jets, Bailey fixes a problem immediately, even if he doesn’t solve every problem long term. The B grade isn’t lukewarm; it is strategically cautious, however. The Jets are acknowledging Bailey’s ability to move the needle now by bringing production, consistency, and a clear role from day one. He may not be the flashiest name in the draft class, but he’s built to make an impact where it counts. Sometimes the smartest move isn’t chasing greatness, it’s securing it in pieces.
