Gary Sánchez leaves ’em loaded
Milwaukee had a rare opportunity to make Alcantara pay for uncharacteristic wildness but couldn’t cash in.
Walks to Joey Ortiz, William Contreras and Brice Turang loaded the bases with one out in the third for Gary Sánchez, but the Brewers designated hitter’s lack of wheels caught up to him in the big spot. Sánchez broke his bat on a sinker from Alcantara and sent a slow dribbler toward shortstop. The ball was hit so slowly that nearly every other runner in baseball would have been safe at first and a run could have scored, but the Marlins turned two as the ball beat Sánchez to first by a full step.
Marlins go up on a pair of singles
The middle of the Marlins order kept finding holes in the infield up the middle to take a lead in the second.
Liam Hicks followed a 1-2-3 bottom of the first with Miami’s first hit off Woodruff just out of shortstop Joey Ortiz’s range. Hicks moved to second on Otto Lopez’s infield chopper, then scored on a Connor Norby 94 mph grounder to center.
Brewers leave two stranded in second
A pair of sound two-out at-bats gave the Brewers a chance against Sandy Alcantara in the second, but Brandon Lockridge was unable to come through.
Luis Rengifo sliced a double to the opposite field in an 0-2 count to put a runner on, then Garrett Mitchell drew a full count and worked a walk. But Lockridge, thanks to Hicks overturning a called ball, fell behind in the count, 0-2, and grounded out softly to second.
