LAFAYETTE, IN — Lafayette police officers shot and killed a man who was brandishing a gun in the 2200 block of Stillwell Street early Sunday morning, police said.
Dispatchers were called about 12:15 a.m. on a report of an “intoxicated male pointing a firearm at another individual,” police said in a statement. “Officers responded to the area and encountered an armed male in the roadway. Officers issued repeated commands for the male to drop the firearm. The male did not comply and continued to ignore commands and officers’ attempts to de-escalate the situation.
“The situation resulted in an officer-involved shooting,” the statement said.
Despite immediate medical attention, the man later died. No officers were injured during the incident, police said.
Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello said in a statement later Sunday morning that the man was in his 60s and that her office is working to confirm his identity and find next of kin.
The involved officers are on administrative leave, police said.
Police said they are still investigating, along with Indiana State Police.
