Hartland has learned it can compete against the best girls soccer teams in the state.

Now the Eagles need to find a way to score more consistently against them.

Seventh-ranked Hartland played its third state-ranked Division 1 team this season, battling No. 10 Northville to a 1-1 tie on Thursday, April 9.

The Eagles are 1-1-1 in those games, but have scored only three goals. They won 1-0 over No. 8 Troy Athens and lost 2-1 to No. 6 Rochester Adams.

It was the first meeting between Hartland and Northville since the Mustangs (2-0-1) beat the Eagles 4-0 in a regional championship game last season.

“We’ve gone 1-1-1 in our three top-10 games,” Hartland coach Andrew Kartsounes said. “It shows we belong there, but we’ve still got some work we can do. It’s still early in the season.”

Hartland took a 1-0 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half when Claire L’Esperance scored off a pass from Eva Larson. Northville got the equalizer early in the second half.

“The last 10 minutes we were putting a lot of pressure on, but couldn’t find the back of the net,” Kartsounes said. “That’s something we need to work on early in the season is getting those finishes when we have opportunities.”
