Martone for the win! Former Spartans star scores first career NHL goal in OT

A former Spartan scored his first career NHL goal on Sunday, and it came in a big way.

Former Michigan State hockey star freshman Porter Martone scored his first career NHL goal on Sunday, which happened to be an overtime winner for the Philadelphia Flyers against the Boston Bruins. The goal from Martone lifted the Flyers to a critical win in their push for one of the final playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.

Martone ended the game with an assist and goal, and is now up to three career points in his short early stint with the Flyers.

In his lone season with the Spartans this past year, Martone recorded 50 points (25 goals and 25 assists) across 35 games. He was a First Team All-Big Ten selection and also selected to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.

I personally wish Martone wasn’t even playing with the Flyers right now, and prepping for the Frozen Four next weekend. But that’s not the case, and ultimately it’s nice to see him having instant success at the highest level of the game.
