Nearly $30M multiyear project continues on major Rockford corridor

ROCKFORD, IL — A second phase of the 11th Street reconstruction project from 18th Avenue to Charles Street is scheduled this summer even as Rockford completes the first phase of work that began last year.

City Council will consider a $9.7 million contract with Freeport-based Fischer Excavating Services to do the work for Phase 2. Also up for a vote is a $593,000 engineering agreement with Fehr Graham for overseeing the work and daily inspections.

The overall $29.3 million multi-phase project includes pavement reconstruction, a road diet, installation of an off-street multi-use path, separated sidewalks, signal upgrades, pedestrian lighting, new water main, lead service line replacement, landscaping and decorative elements along the 11th Street corridor.

It is being paid for with funds from the city’s 1% road and infrastructure sales tax and water utility proceeds.

Meanwhile, workers are still completing the $15.9 million first phase of the project from Harrison Avenue to Broadway as it reconstructs the 11th Street corridor.

Other major projects scheduled this summer include the estimated $7 million project to reconstruct Madison Street from Prairie Street to Y Boulevard; the $2 million resurfacing of Newburg Road from Mulford to Alpine road; and the $6.5 million reconstruction of Auburn Street including resurfacing and road diet from Central Avenue to Main Street.
