Is the winter storm finally over? See current warnings, advisories

Michigan counties along Lake Michigan’s shore in the Lower Peninsula are under a winter weather advisory on Tuesday, March 17, with an additional 2 inches of snow predicted — on top of the major accumulations from this week’s winter storm.

“Lake effect snow lingers across northwest Lower and pushes inland this afternoon (March 17),” the National Weather Service in Gaylord said on X on March 17. “Hazardous travel with reduced visibilities at times will be possible with winds decreasing through the day.”

Cities along the lakeshore could see 35 mph wind gusts on Tuesday, March 17, which could cause damage to weak trees or buildings, as well as reduce visibility.

In addition, a heavy freezing spray warning is in place on the Great Lakes until 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17, because ice accumulation that could damage to vessels or other structures.

Calmer weather is forecast through the work week for Michigan, according to the NWS office in Marquette, though heavy snow may return over the weekend.

Where is a winter weather advisory in place in Michigan?

Until 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17, a winter weather advisory will remain in place for the counties along Lake Michigan in the Lower Peninsula.

An additional 1-2 inches of snow is expected to collect those areas. For the rest of the state, trace amounts of snow is predicted to accumulate by Wednesday morning, March 18, according to the Probabilistic Precipitation Portal.

“Winds may continue to exacerbate impacts to trees and infrastructure in areas affected by heavy icing this morning (March 17),” said the Gaylord NWS office.
