The Indian River Mall was built in 1996 by the Edward J. Debartolo Corp. Four stores — JCPenney, Sears, Dillard's and Burdines — originally anchored the mall. In 1997, the movie theater and food court were added. Sears and Burdines — which was rebranded Macy's in 2005 — have since closed, leaving only Dillard's and JCPenney.
