The IRS isn’t going to do your taxes for you. But if you’re burdened with tax woes — such as questions about a tax bill or an IRS audit — you might benefit from special Saturday hours on select days at the IRS taxpayer assistance centers in Detroit and elsewhere.
The Internal Revenue Service will open many of its Taxpayer Assistance Centers for special hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on select Saturdays in February through June to offer in-person help.
No appointment is needed but you may have to wait for service, depending on how many people show up.
IRS employees meet face to face with taxpayers at these events to offer help with tax account issues, such as authenticating someone’s identity, asking about account adjustments, and making payments by check or money order. The IRS is not accepting cash payments during the special Saturday openings.
Services available during Saturday hours
People can get help with all services routinely offered at these assistance centers, except for making cash payments, according to the IRS. The IRS has a list of dates, times and locations of Saturday events posted online but suggests that you check back for new information as situations can change during the season.
For deaf or hard of hearing individuals who need sign language interpreter services, the IRS says, call TTY/TDD 800-829-4059 to make an appointment.
For more information about Saturday hours, go to IRS.gov/SaturdayHours. Remember, not all taxpayer assistance centers will be open on Saturdays.
Taxpayers continue to be encouraged to try to solve problems or get answers to general questions by going to IRS.gov.
What to bring to a Saturday IRS visit
If you do go to a Saturday event, be prepared to bring specific paperwork. You’d want to have things on hand such as: current government-issued photo identification, along with a second form of identification; Social Security or Individual Taxpayer Identification numbers for yourself and all members of their household, including spouse and dependents (if applicable); any IRS letters or notices received and related documents, and a copy or digital image of the tax return in question if one was filed.
The IRS asks people not to bring cameras, weapons or food and drinks.
Typically, IRS taxpayer assistance centers are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and will work with taxpayers by appointment only. To make an appointment, call 844-545-5640.
