Learn about Aldo Leopold’s legacy at Earth Week Plus event March 8 in Cheboygan

The environmental legacy of famous conservationist Aldo Leopold will be the topic of an Earth Week Plus event on March 8.

According to a release from Earth Week Plus, Leopold, born in 1887, is considered by many to be the father of wildlife ecology and modern conservation. His essays often asked people to combine their care for humanity with care for the land and nature, forming his “Land Ethic” philosophy.

Much of his writing was compiled in “A Sand County Almanac,” which was published in 1949, one year after Leopold’s death.

A community reading of “A Sand County Almanac” will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 8 at the Cheboygan Area Public Library. Members of the community will read sections of the book, which organizers said are “intended to build a sense of ‘place’ and help build a bond among community members to inspire critical thinking about our natural world — and how we must work to protect it.”

The community reading is made possible by a grant from the Aldo Leopold Foundation. A limited number of free copies of “A Sand County Almanac” will also be available.

The event, which is free and appropriate for all ages, will include refreshments and live music.
