LAFAYETTE, IN — A Michigan man led police on a high-speed chase across Interstate 65 Wednesday, allegedly speeding through several counties before being arrested by Indiana State Police.
ISP received a call from the Boone County Communications Center about 9:46 p.m. with a report of a reckless driver on a sport bike heading north on I-65, according to an ISP news release.
Shortly afterward, a state trooper saw a 2014 Suzuki GSX-R1000 heading north on I-65, clocking the bike at 110 miles per hour near the 169-mile marker, the release said. Police initiated a traffic stop as the bike exited the interstate onto Indiana 26.
The motorcycle driver, 36-year-old Damian Martin of Redford, Michigan, pulled into a parking lot just west of I-65, indicating to officers that he intended to stop. But as a trooper began to exit their patrol car, Martin fled, the release said.
Police followed Martin on his bike as he re-entered I-65 heading southbound, creating a chase that formed a loop on the interstate, according to the release. Martin hopped on at the Indiana 38 ramp before exiting at the Indiana 28 ramp, where Martin re-entered the interstate northbound.
Troopers followed the bike “at high speeds” before Martin left the interstate again at the Indiana 26 off-ramp and began traveling south again, the release said. The chase continued southbound until Martin pulled off at a rest area near the 150-mile marker.
Martin parked his bike between two semi-trailers while attempting to hide from officers beneath one of the semis, police said. Officers quickly found Martin, transporting him first to IU Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette for a chemical test before taking him to the Tippecanoe County Jail.
As of Thursday afternoon, Martin remains in the jail on several preliminary charges, including resisting law enforcement while creating a substantial risk of injury, criminal recklessness, operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing endangerment, and possession of a controlled substance.
