Des Moines Roosevelt girls basketball player Malaina Hackley and Indianola boys wrestler Chandler Brown were voted the Des Moines Register’s female and male Athlete of the Week winners from the Des Moines metro area for the week of Jan. 25-31.
Hackley dominated the female Athlete of the Week voting with 94% of the vote.
She was a massive piece of the Des Moines Roosevelt basketball team’s 67-27 victory over Des Moines Lincoln on Jan. 27.
Hackley finished with just four points in the game, but did an amazing job distributing the ball, finishing with 11 assists against just two turnovers. She was also a force on the boards with eight rebounds and on defense with three steals.
Brown won male Athlete of the Week with 62% of the vote.
He placed first at 106 pounds during the Little Hawkeye Conference wrestling tournament on Jan. 31.
Brown received a bye in the quarterfinals and then he defeated Dallas Center-Grimes’ Quin Harris by technical fall, 21-2. In the finals, Brown toppled Pella’s Carter Schroeder by a 7-1 decision to improve to 25-7 on the season.
