Newark basketball player Ty Gilbert was selected as the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Boys Athlete of the Week for Jan. 19-26.
Gilbert scored 26 points with four rebounds and two steals in a 60-54 win at Olentangy Orange on Jan. 24. He also had 11 points, including three 3-pointers, in a 67-39 win over Logan.
Gilbert received 61.5% of the vote and was followed by Granville wrestler Nash Finley, who received 33.9%, and St. Charles hockey player Will Howard (4.4%).
Also nominated were Dublin Jerome bowler Harrison Hu, Hilliard Darby bowler Isaac Fellner and Hilliard Bradley basketball player Kypton Norris.
Finley earned his 100th career victory in winning the 120-pound championship of the Jimmy Wood Invitational.
Howard scored two goals in a 5-0 win over Cincinnati Moeller and one goal in a 3-2 win over Moeller.
Hu had games of 200, 203, 215 and 224 in wins over Olentangy and Thomas Worthington. He is averaging 208.2 on the season with a high game of 269.
Fellner averaged 219.8 in six games, four of which were over 200 with a high 252, in wins over Westerville North and Worthington Kilbourne and a loss to Delaware Hayes.
Norris scored 14 points in a 43-33 win over Upper Arlington.
The Athlete of the Week voting recognizes athletes across all sports.
Nominations are due Monday mornings for competitions that took place the previous week. The boys poll is live until 4 p.m. Fridays. The girls poll is live until 4 p.m. Saturdays.
