PORT HURON — From peewee, to prep, to minor professional, Port Huron is home to many levels of hockey.
Soon, another version of the sport will take hold in the city.
St. Clair County Community College (SC4) is adding a men’s hockey team to its athletic program, the school announced Thursday, Jan. 29, in a press release.
The team will debut this fall and play at McMorran Arena. Rob Churchill, general manager of McMorran, will serve as coach.
“This new hockey program reflects SC4’s commitment to expanding opportunities for students and connecting the region we proudly serve,” SC4 president Kirk Kramer said in the release. “Skippers hockey at McMorran Arena is a natural and exciting step forward.”
“Coach Churchill and his staff will begin recruiting efforts as soon as possible to develop their fall roster,” SC4 vice president of student services Nick Beaudry told the Times Herald in an email. “Which will include an open tryout in the spring for current SC4 students.”
Beaudry added that SC4 is applying for membership in the American Collegiate Hockey Association and will “continue to evaluate the options that best suit the college to enter next season, whether it as an independent or seek membership in a league.”
The release also said SC4 is “exploring additional sports to be announced for the coming school year.”
Previously, the college had a hockey program from 1971 to 1978.
