Michigan football hired former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham in December to take over the program in the wake of the controversy surrounding Sherrone Moore, and while he’s getting paid handsomely, so are his new coordinators.
Whittingham hired one-year Utah offensive coordinator Jason Beck to oversee that side of the ball and BYU defensive coordinator Jay Hill (who was a longtime head coach at Weber State) to oversee the defense. Both will be doing well for themselves in Ann Arbor.
According to The Athletic’s Austin Meek, both coordinators are on three-year deals with Beck making $3 million per year and Hill set to make $2.6 million.
For comparison, now-former Michigan defensive coordinator Wink Martindale averaged $2.5 million in his deal.
Given what each coordinator has done in their tenures elsewhere, the pay is commensurate with their abilities to lead either side of the ball. Beck had a mediocre first season as an OC with Syracuse before igniting the New Mexico offense for one season and Utah last year. Hill had a similar effect on the Cougars, helping BYU go from being a relatively meager defense to one of the better ones in college football.
Now both will be tasked not with doing more with less, but doing more with more — each for the first time in their careers.
