Akron native Paul Tazewell was passed over this year for an Oscar nomination for his costume designs in “Wicked: For Good.”
He won an Academy Award last year for his fantastical designs in the blockbuster film “Wicked,” the first half of the story about Elphaba and Glinda. In doing so, he became the first Black man to win an Oscar for costume design.
Tazewell was first nominated for an Oscar in 2022 for his costume designs for Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story.”
Oscar nominees for this year’s best costume design are “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme” and “Sinners.”
The “Wicked: For Good” musical sequel was snubbed in the 2026 Academy Award nominations announced Jan. 22, receiving none. Ariana Grande had been touted as a frontrunner for best supporting actress in November.
Last year, “Wicked” received 10 Academy Award nominations and won two, including best costume design and best production design.
Leading the Oscar nominations pack this year is “Sinners” with a record 16 nominations.
When are the 2026 Academy Awards?
The Oscars will be held March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and will air live on ABC and Hulu.
