VOTE: Volusia-Flagler Girls Athlete of the Week for Dec. 15-20 presented by Halifax Health

The polls are open!

It’s time to vote for the Halifax Health Volusia-Flagler Girls Athlete of the Week for the week of Dec. 15-20.

Last week, Spruce Creek soccer player Payton Drexler captured the honors, claiming 52% of the votes. The senior goalkeeper made seven saves in a 1-0 shutout of DeLand.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal gathers nominees for upcoming polls from across the area via email at cvinel@usatodayco.com. Please send a player’s name, school and notable statistics for a given week. Submissions are due no later than 8 a.m. every Monday.

To round out the ballot, our staff also picks athletes from scores and stats posted online or submitted by local coaches. Athletes for all in-season sports are eligible.

Voting in the online poll below will close at 10 a.m. Friday. Votes are restricted to once per device per hour. Emailed votes will not count.

Basketball

Brooklyn Tumminello, Father Lopez: The freshman had back-to-back 19-point games vs. Faith Christian and Matanzas.

Soccer

Ava Castro, Taylor: On Senior Night, Castro celebrated with a hat trick and an assist, leading the Wildcats past Crescent City 5-2.

Hazel Ortega, Mainland: The sophomore scored all three of the Buccaneers’ goals in a 3-2 win over Father Lopez.

Weightlifting

Riley Bennett, Spruce Creek: The senior topped the 199-pound weight class in the Olympic and traditional standings at the Five Star meet, with a 310 Olympic total and a 335 traditional score.

Carli Hall, New Smyrna Beach: The senior was a double champion in the 169-pound weight class at the Five Star meet, putting up totals of 340 in Olympic and 375 in traditional. Hall also broke a school record by hitting a 205-pound clean and jerk.

Nya Williams, Flagler Palm Coast: Williams claimed Olympic and traditional gold in the 119-pound weight class at the Five Star meet, hoisting Olympic and traditional totals of 335.

Wrestling

R’Cardenay Michel, Matanzas: Michel went 5-0 to sit atop the 125-pound weight class at the Rumble on the Range.
