Newburgh man who fired gun on NFA campus sentenced to prison

GOSHEN – A Newburgh man who fired a gun on the campus of Newburgh Free Academy after getting into a fight with students there earlier this year was sentenced to nine years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler announced the sentence for Kevin Gaspar, 19, of Newburgh. He was sentenced Dec. 4 in Orange County Court.

He previously pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony.

According to documents filed and statements made in court, Gaspar was on the campus of NFA on South Street in the city of Newburgh at approximately 2:20 p.m. on Jan. 14, 2025.

A group of kids started a fight with Gaspar while he was there. Before the fight broke up and the kids walked away, Gaspar ran toward the group of kids and fired multiple shots from a firearm.

Gaspar narrowly missed his targets.

The firearm was later recovered by the police in two separate pieces, discarded in leaves and brush.

At his plea proceeding, Gaspar admitted to illegally possessing the loaded firearm.

“Brazen gunplay in our communities is unacceptable, and we must employ all resources available to identify and prosecute the perpetrators responsible,” Hoovler said in a statement released by his office.

The name of Gaspar’s attorney was not immediately available.
