3 former Chargers named Hall of Fame semifinalists for Class of 2026

Former Chargers quarterbacks Philip Rivers and Drew Brees and safety Rodney Harrison were named modern-era semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026 on Tuesday.

This is the first time Rivers and Brees have been named semifinalists. This is the fifth time Harrison has been named a semifinalist.

The Chargers acquired Rivers through a draft-day trade with the Giants, sending Eli Manning to New York in return for Rivers. He amassed 59,271 passing yards and 397 touchdown passes during that time, which ranks first in franchise history in both categories. Rivers had a record of 123-101, making the playoffs six times and going 5-6 in 11 postseason games.

The Chargers took Brees in the second round of the 2001 NFL draft. During his five years with the Bolts, he started in 58 games, throwing for 12,348 yards, 80 touchdowns, and 53 interceptions. Brees then played for the Saints, where he won a Super Bowl (XLIV), was named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year twice (2008, 2011), and earned 13 Pro Bowl selections.

Harrison finished his career with three Pro Bowls, two Super Bowl rings, 1,206 career tackles and 34 interceptions. He was named to the 50th-anniversary teams of both the Chargers and Patriots.
