MANITOWOC – Manitowoc school board is considering a reconfiguration plan for the Manitowoc Public School District that proposes closing Madison and Jackson elementary schools.
A news release from MPSD states: “The recommendations are based on an extensive review of current enrollment trends, community population patterns, future residential growth, building repair needs and transportation considerations.”
The key pieces of the proposal include the following:
The school board is not voting to accept the proposal Nov. 25. The special meeting is intended to only present the proposal to the school board. The public can watch a livestream of the meeting on YouTube.
During a previous school board meeting, Superintendent Lee Thennes said it was important for the district to “right-size ourselves” to maintain high-quailty programs and staff throughout MPSD.
A less detailed restructuring plan was presented by the Facility Advisory Committee Oct. 22.
“There was a lot of healthy conversation about what that means (restructuring the district), what it means for the neighborhoods,” committee member Mike Hacker told the board.
A Community Information Session about the district’s reconfiguration plan will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 1 in the Lincoln High School auditorium.
The school board’s next regular meeting is set for 6 p.m. Dec. 9.
