The Iowa City Press-Citizen student of the week poll has returned for another round of voting.
Each week, Johnson County high school principals and faculty are asked to nominate students who excel in and out of the classroom.
The public can vote at press-citizen.com until noon on Thursday, Nov. 13. The winner will be announced on Friday, and an accompanying story will be published in the Press-Citizen.
Students from public and private high schools in Johnson County are eligible.
Iowa City Liberty High School junior Chelsea VeDepo was the Press-Citizen’s most recent Student of the Week.
Saria Adalla, Iowa City Liberty High School
Iowa City Liberty High School senior Saria Abdalla and is a leader. She is an active member of many clubs and a student leader of the Black and Latino Student Union and Mock Schedule Committee for NHS’s New Student Orientation. Abdalla is dedicated to philanthropic causes at St. Luke’s Hospital and community-building events with the Mariam Girls Club. Adalla has cultivated a passion for healthcare and most recently won the “Investor’s Choice” at the Design Dash in collaboration with the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is on her way to earning a Nurse Aide Certification through Kirkwood. Abdalla also co-founded Liberty’s first Healthcare Occupations Students of America (HOSA) chapter.
Elaine Burer, Iowa City High School
Iowa City High School senior Elaine Burer is the stage manager for the production of “East of the Sun, West of the Moon.” She is the liaison between students and staff, coordinating schedules while overseeing the needs of actors and crew. She also leads the shift crew in choreographing and executing complex scene changes. Burer has developed artistic and leadership skills through a variety of roles in the theatre department, including shift crew, construction lead, props manager, set designer, and assistant stage manager. She hopes to pursue a career in technical theatre after high school. Burer also participates in mock trial and 4th Avenue, City High’s varsity show choir.
Brendan Olney, Iowa City Regina Catholic High School
Iowa City Regina Catholic High School senior Brendan Olney is an involved student participating in activities such as cross country, track and field, weightlifting, yearbook club, and the National Honor Society. He is also a Community System House Captain. Olney is a top student and has taken multiple Advanced Placement courses, while maintaining part-time jobs throughout his high school career at places like Pagliai’s Pizza, Pop’s BBQ, and Camp Bear Creek.
About Student of the Week
The Press-Citizen’s student of the week poll is a weekly contest throughout the academic year. Polls will open on Mondays and close on Thursdays. Students from public and private high schools in the Iowa City area are eligible.
