Lansing forecast: Accumulating snow possible this weekend

LANSING — Snow is in the forecast for this weekend, as long as you include the words “maybe” or “possibly.”

The first accumulating snow of the season could happen from Saturday night into Sunday, with roughly a 30% chance for 2 inches or more in the Lansing area, the National Weather Service said.

Scott Thomas, a forecaster for the weather service in Grand Rapids, said a couple of big questions remained as of Wednesday afternoon: Whether it will be cold enough for any precipitation to fall as snow, and, is the ground too warm for snow to stick?

“There are some chances for accumulating snow, but they are pretty low right now,” Thomas said on Wednesday, Nov. 5. “The most likely outcome is very little accumulation with some chances for higher amounts.”

The detailed forecast listed a slight chance for snow early on Saturday, Nov. 8, but temperatures were likely to drop over the following couple of days, with highs of around 40 degrees on Sunday and 37 degrees on Monday and lows of around 23 degrees on Sunday and Monday nights.

It was looking like the best chance for accumulating snow will be along a band between Interstates 94 and 96, although that could change, Thomas said.

There’s nothing particularly unusual about snow at this time of year, Thomas noted. Nov. 9 is the average first snow date for the region, he said.
