Taylor County voters equally approved individual local propositions in three separate communities, according to unofficial final numbers from the Taylor County Election Office.

Voters in the Abilene ISD passed a Voter-Approval Tax Ratification Election, or VATRE, for teacher recruitment and retention, as well as to eliminate a budget deficit.

The permanent increase to district coffers of $10 million utilizes a combination of $6.3 million in special funding set aside by the state. Its implementation required a ballot initiative, as well as $3.7 million in local funding.

Proposition A passed with 54.59% of the vote or 4,137 votes for it and 3,441 against.

Shortly before midnight Tuesday, AISD released a statement expressing gratitude for the measure’s approval.

“Thank you to everyone who participated in this important election for the future of Abilene ISD,” Dr. John Kuhn, superintendent, said. “We appreciate our voters for choosing to support our students, staff and schools. The trust of our community is a precious resource, and we look forward to holding up our end of the deal by ensuring that Abilene ISD continues to capitalize on our positive academic and financial momentum.”

Voters in Merkel ISD pulled the lever in favor of their own Proposition A. The $20 bond to build a new middle school, as well funding for improvements or changes to current facilities, garnered 57.53% of the vote.

The unofficial tally came in at 428 for the measure to 315 against it.

The Proposition A in Tuscola asked voters to ratify a new ad valorem tax rate of 98.7 cents per $100 valuation, which is to bring in an additional $626,232 for Jim Ned Consolidated ISD’s operational and maintenance expenses.

That measure passed with 60.3% of the vote with 940 approving and 619 against.
