ALLIANCE ‒ A former member of Alliance City Schools Board of Education will make a comeback.
Teresa Caserta, 47, a longtime educator, won a seat on the school board in the Nov. 4 general election.
Final, unofficial results show Caserta was a top vote-getter, defeating one of the three incumbents, Beth Canfield-Simbro, for the spot. Incumbents Tyler Kinser and William Koch were re-elected for another term.
“I voted for Mrs. Caserta. She’s great,” said retiree Leslie Edighoffer, 71.
Kinser received 1,480 votes; Koch had 1,396; and Caserta garnered 1,096 votes in the multi-county race. Finishing close behind was Lori Burse with 1,082 votes. Canfield-Simbro got 879 votes.
The district stretches into Stark, Columbiana and Mahoning counties. The final count is subject to change.
Caserta has served as a principal in the Canton City School District and with St. Thomas Aquinas. She founded the now-defunct Bulldog Virtual Academy, and currently teaches at Fairmount Learning Center in Canton. She previously served on the Alliance school board.
Board members are paid $125 per monthly meeting; not to exceed 24 meetings in a year. They are only paid for meetings they attend.
Marlington Local voters stick with 3 incumbents
Leading into the November election, Marlington Local voters had six choices for three seats on the school board.
Three were incumbents. Three were challengers.
Unofficial results show a majority of voters didn’t want a change, with all three incumbents re-elected.
The incumbents were Karen S. Humphries, Cathy L. Krupko and Mark E. Ryan. The challengers were Luke Cowles, Jim Hornyak and Steve Viscounte.
Ryan was top vote-getter at 2,155 votes, followed by Krupko (2,138) and Humphries (2,070). Viscounte finished with 1,515 votes, followed by Hornyak at 1,411 and Cowles received 1,313.
Board members receive $480 twice a year (about $80 a month), regardless of how many events or meetings they attend.
